This guide covers the purpose, scope and proper usage of the "Taylor & Francis Article DTD" (for brevity also known as the "TFJA DTD"). It was developed by Taylor & Francis for production and archiving of all journal articles published by this organisation. This DTD usually has the filename "TFJA.dtd".
Guide Structure
This guide is divided into two main sections. First, the DTD is discussed at a high level, including explanations of its scope and context, its general characteristics and design philosophy (a "top-down" approach). Second, every element and attribute is described in isolation to explain its proper role and the contexts within which it can be used (a "bottom-up" approach).
In addition to the two main sections, there are statistics on the document model, and a complete copy of the DTD that includes links between element definitions to enable easy navigation of the DTD.
New Readers
For those new to the TFJA DTD, it is recommended that you start by reading the overview topics in order to gain a good understanding of the DTD in general terms. The order in which the topics are listed has been carefully chosen to introduce concepts in a sensible order, so it is highly recommended that they are initially read in this order.
Feedback
Taylor & Francis is always interested in receiving feedback. Please contact
[email protected] and
[email protected] for clarification or to suggest modifications to the guide if you identify an error of fact, or have difficulty in understanding a feature of the guide, an explanation of a concept, or a description of an element or attribute.
Version Numbering
Version numbers for the DTD are incremented in 1.0 form, such that minor changes are indicated by incrementing second number,
and major changes are indicated by incrementing the first number. Most changes are minor. Any change that would break compatibility with existing XMLs
would be considered a major change, and would also involve use of a new standard PUBLIC and SYSTEM identifier indicating the major version of the DTD.
The DTD documentation may be updated more frequently than the DTD itself. Version numbers for this DTD User Guide are incremented in 1.0.0 form,
such that the first two numbers are tied to the DTD version. Changes made to the documentation between DTD releases are indicated by incrementing the third number.
Character entity definition files, and potentially other modules included in the DTD as separate files, may be updated separately from DTD releases.
Changes to entity and module files will be described in the Change History for the DTD.
Each separate file included in the DTD will indicate the files' version or date of last change near the top of the file.
