Description

This attribute provides the official year of publication that the journal issue that included the article was published. It should contain the volume year of the issue in which the article was published, and should match the year included in coverdate. The value must be consistent across all articles within an issue. Please see "Publication Dates in Online Files".

It appears on several lower-level elements that could be extracted from the article, so that they can continue to carry this information after extraction.
