Article Type

Every article is assigned an article type from the Article Types Taxonomy, a controlled vocabulary of article types that is used across all Taylor & Francis journals. This page contains the Article Types Taxonomy and instructions for tagging article type.

Table of Contents

Article Type

Article Type is an important identifier for classifying the type of a journal article using a controlled vocabulary. Every journal article has an article type assigned to it. The article type classification is important for several reasons:

  • It tells the readers what type of article an article is and can help enable better searching
  • It impacts how certain article types are typeset – e.g., a book review vs. a research article
  • It helps determine online access rules
  • It impacts APC billing and read and publish deals

An article type is usually assigned to an article at the submission stage, although the article type assignment for an article may be corrected while the article is being prepared for publication. Misclassifying articles can have negative impacts. The Production Hub contains guidance for production teams about the assignment of article type to articles.

Article type will normally be provided in cats.xml for current content.

When retrodigitizing or converting previously-published content, the most appropriate article type for an article should be selected from the Article Types Taxonomy. The table of article types on this page can be consulted as a primary reference.

In rare cases article-type="other” can be used where no corresponding article type is suitable or where the article type display on TFO must be hidden but this is not recommended practice and should be avoided wherever possible.

Article Type and Section Heading

Article type is associated with section heading. An article may have the same text value as its section heading and article type, although section headings are not restricted. Section headings display on tables of contents and on article pages. Best practice is to use one of the article types from the taxonomy and then use the section heading (<subj-group subj-group-type="heading"><subject>) to capture journal-specific article types or heading if there is no matching article type. The section heading is designed to capture the wording used in the Section Heading field in CATS. For further guidance on section heading tagging, please see the Section Headings topic.

On TFO, article type and section heading are both displayed on issue table of contents pages. Section heading is also displayed on article pages above the article title. Article type is also displayed in search results and can be used to filter search results. Note that on TFO the article type “Research Article” is displayed as “Article” and article types “Other”, “Front Matter”, and “Back Matter” are not displayed.

article-type attribute

The root <article> element contains the article type. The article-type in the root element should be lower case and use hyphens rather than spaces. For example:

<article article-type="research-article"

Some page templates may rely on the @article-type attribute on the root element. Article type is also used in Schematron validation rules, article-type-specific configurations in CATS, reporting, and other functionality.

article-type subject element

The <article-categories> element also contains the article type. The article type should be tagged in <subj-group subj-group-type="article-type"><subject> for display using title case and spaces instead of hyphens. For example:

<article-categories>
    <subj-group subj-group-type="article-type"><subject>Research Article</subject></subj-group>

The article type in @article-type and <subject> must be consistent. For example:

<article article-type="research-article">
<subj-group subj-group-type="article-type"><subject>Research Article</subject></subj-group>

article-type-custom subject element

When an article has previously been assigned an article type that is not among the currently available article types in the Article Types Taxonomy then this article type should be tagged as a custom article type. A custom article type can be any text, and there is no restriction on custom article type.

The article should also be assigned a standard article type from the Article Types Taxonomy. Assignment of a standard article type based on a non-standard custom article type can be done using a mapping, such as the mapping shown in the table of Obsolete Article Types.

The custom article type should be tagged in <subj-group subj-group-type="article-type-custom"><subject>. For example:

<article-categories>
    <subj-group subj-group-type="article-type-custom"><subject>Original</subject></subj-group>

It is useful to tag a custom article type when an article is being retrodigitized or converted if an article was previously assigned an article type from a different controlled vocabulary. A custom article type may also be tagged to capture a journal-specific article type.

The following example shows a case where an article was previously given an article type “Original Research” that is not available in the article types taxonomy. The article type “Original Research” is tagged in “article-type-custom”. This article does not have a section heading so the text “Original Research” is also tagged as the section heading in “heading” so that this text will be displayed on the article on TFO. In addition, an equivalent article type “Research Article” is assigned to the article from the article types taxonomy and tagged in “article-type” and in the @article-type attribute.

<article article-type="research-article">
<article-categories>
    <subj-group subj-group-type="article-type"><subject>Research Article</subject></subj-group>
    <subj-group subj-group-type="article-type-custom"><subject>Original Research</subject></subj-group>
    <subj-group subj-group-type="heading"><subject>Original Research</subject></subj-group>
</article-categories>

Examples

Article type is tagged within article element preceding the front section

<article article-type="research-article">

Article type is also tagged in article-categories within the article-meta section, which also contains a section heading

<article-categories>
    <subj-group subj-group-type="article-type"><subject>Research Article</subject></subj-group>
    <subj-group subj-group-type="heading"><subject>Clinical Research Article</subject></subj-group>
</article-categories>

Where no section heading is required the article type can be tagged without a section heading. In this case the article type may be used for display in places where a section heading would normally appear.

<article-categories>
    <subj-group subj-group-type="article-type"><subject>Correction</subject></subj-group>
</article-categories>

When Other is the article-type a section heading should be tagged.

<article article-type="other">
<article-categories>
    <subj-group subj-group-type="article-type"><subject>Other</subject></subj-group>
    <subj-group subj-group-type="heading"><subject>City Know-How</subject></subj-group>
</article-categories>

Obsolete Article Types

Our article types taxonomy has been updated over time and occasionally article types have been removed. When an article type is removed it is made “inactive” and another should be used instead. The table below provides a mapping from inactive article types to active article types. Article types that are inactive should not be used on new articles. Article types that are inactive can be still present on older articles in CATS that were published before the article type was made inactive.

Review An article or book published after examination of published material on a subject. It may be comprehensive to various degrees and the time range of material scrutinized may be broad or narrow, but the reviews most often desired are reviews of the current literature. The textual material examined may be equally broad and can encompass, in medicine specifically, clinical material as well as experimental research or case reports. State-of-the-art reviews tend to address more current matters. A review of the literature must be differentiated from HISTORICAL ARTICLE on the same subject, but a review of historical literature is also within the scope of this publication type. review 2023-01-09 obsolete Review Article

  1. Article Type: This column shows each article type term as it will be presented to users. Each article type must, for consistency, be singular (not plural), be in title case (major words should have the first letter capitalized, minor words should be all lower case), and use only letters and spaces (no punctuation or other characters). This value should be tagged in /article/front/article-meta/article-categories/subj-group[@subj-group-type="article-type"]/subject. ↩︎

  2. JATS @article-type attribute: This column shows the normalized form of each article type. The normalized form must be consistent with the article type term, use only lower-case letters, and use the dash character in place of spaces. This value should be tagged in the attribute /article/@article-type. ↩︎

  3. Related Article: This column indicates if an article that has the article type should have related article tagging to establish a bidirectional link with at least one other article. Certain article types are required to have a related article (Must), for example Retraction. Certain other article types often have a related article but are not required to (Should), for example Commentary. Any article may have a related article regardless of the article type that is assigned to the article (May). See Related Articles for details about related article tagging. ↩︎

  4. Class: RA, Research Article; S&P, Specialist and Professional Article. The class association with article type as presented here is only a guide. Class assignment is article specific and may be different from this table for individual articles. ↩︎

  5. Related Term: This column shows associated article types that may be conceptually related or may be useful for consideration to disambiguate artice types. ↩︎

  6. Use Instead: This column shows the suggested mapping from an obsolete article type to a possibly equivalent article type. This suggested mapping may not be correct in all cases. The assignment of a new article type may be different from this table for individual articles. ↩︎
