Introduction

All Taylor & Francis journals are produced using the JATS XML format. JATS is an industry standard format (NISO Z39.96-2019) for production and interchange of journal content. Taylor & Francis requires all journal content XML to be produced according to version 1.2 of the NISO JATS standard. In addition to baseline adherence to the NISO JATS standard, Taylor & Francis requires adherence to a layer of additional standards that reflect the needs of downstream recipients of journal content and metadata.

The documentation contained within this site provides guidelines regarding XML tagging and file preparation. This documentation is intended to be a useful reference for all users of Taylor & Frances JATS XML. Feedback is welcome and encouraged, particularly suggestions for improvements. Comments should be sent to Vincent Lizzi, Head of Information Standards.

The JATS Tag Libraries should be used in conjunction with this documentation. The JATS Tag Libraries describe every element and attribute beginning with an expanded name and a semantic definition, which are the basis for how each element or attribute should be used. The Tag Library for the JATS 1.2 Publishing DTD should, in general, be consulted first because it is the more concise and prescriptive Tag Library. The Tag Library for the JATS 1.2 Archiving & Interchange DTD can also be consulted and provides more options and flexibility. The Tag Library for OASIS CALS Table Model describes the XML structure for tables.

History

Beginning in 2020, first half, all Taylor & Francis journal content is being produced using JATS version 1.2. Prior to this, all Taylor & Francis journal content since 2013 had been produced using TF JATS 1.0, which was based on NISO JATS version 1.0. Prior to that, all Taylor & Francis journal content since 2004 had been produced using TFJA DTD, which was a proprietary XML format. Prior to 2004 a variety of XML and SGML DTDs were used to publish content online.

The TF JATS 1.0 and TFJA DTD formats are still maintained in order to support the archives of back content that were created using these older formats.
